We in SoCal know that summer begins in June, but due to our funky weather (i.e. June Gloom), it doesn’t always feel like that. Sure enough, on July 1, the Gloom goes away and the firey blazes of the sun begin to melt us. Over the weekend, while everyone was at in the pool, I was inside working on the closet in a balmy 70 degree A/C climate. At tennis class last night (from 7-8:30pm), it was still so hot that people were drenching each other with water. Last summer, during a golf tournament on a day that reached over 110, 4 people ended up in the hospital.
People, unless you are in the ocean or a pool right now, SoCal is not a fun place to be! Summer can be BRUTAL.
However, with summer does come something really fun…HOLLYWOOD BOWL SEASON!
Tonight, I’ll be attending my first of many summer Bowl outings to see West Side Story with some of our attorneys. We’re getting there early to have a gourmet dinner, complete with wine pairings, in our private box.
For those of you who have never been to the Bowl, here are a couple of things you should know:
- Parking is a NIGHTMARE. Parking at the Bowl is stack parking. If you get there late, you could wait for over an hour to get out of the lot at the end of the night. If you don’t have valet or a great location in the stacks, I’d highly recommend parking at Hollywood and Highland and paying the $4 for the shuttle. It’s super convenient!!!
- Picnics and booze are fully allowed (no booze if it’s a leased event, meaning a concert…do your homework!) and encouraged. For the people who sit on the lawn in the “cheap seats,” bring blankets and goodies to enjoy and even share with strangers…everyone is in a good mood at the Bowl! For those in the boxes, you can picnic or order meals to be delivered online. Patina runs the food service and it’s DELICIOUS! We usually do this when entertaining guests for work. When you arrive, tables are set up and the first course is already there waiting for you!
- Large screens on either side of the stage make viewing pleasant for everyone, but bringing binoculars or a telephoto lens for your camera are a good idea.
- Even though it’s hot here in SoCal, the Bowl is inside a canyon, so a light sweater might make your night a little more pleasant.
- Some events at the Bowl include a fireworks finale that is really spectacular. The whole perimeter of the dome lights up dramatically. Be sure to check the schedule to see if the event you want to attend includes the finale…you won’t be disappointed!

I LOVE going to the Hollywood Bowl. It’s so pretty.
It’s best to go early and picnic/drink for hours before hand. I saw John Mayer there a few years ago — great times.
we LOVE the bowl! one of our favorite summer date nights! oh and you have to pay the $2 for the seat cushion {and i always bring a quilt, that breeze can pick up sometimes}.
