THE DRESSING ROOM

All weekend long while millions of Americans were laying out by pools or enjoying time with family and friends, I was working on my closet renovation. I was a hot sweaty mess. I also have a goose egg on my head…don’t ask.

I saved my Home Depot gift cards for years and was just about to do the install myself, when I found out that HD contracts with California Closets and that the nominal amount that I’d have to spend was worth it to not have to do the work. : )

My walk in closet is a good size, but it was poorly laid out. It was builder basic, and as you can see, it was starting to pull out of the wall. Something had to change.

I did all the demo on Saturday morning, then patched drywall and textured and painted the ceiling. I bought a chandelier and considered installing it myself, but then I decided to make dinner and invite my friends Lisa and Nate over (Nate is an electrical genius!). On Sunday, I painted the walls and stenciled. I also calked the baseboards and did as much touch up  as was needed. Yesterday, my buddies from California Closets came over and had the whole thing done in an hour. I have three extra feet of storage and the cutest dressing room/closet that you’ve ever seen. I can’t help standing in the middle and just looking at everything!!!

My favorite things are the chandelier, stencil and floor length mirror, and the frame that features some favorite necklaces. The chandelier was from Cutting Edge Stencils. It wasn’t super difficult, but I will say this…stenciling over textured walls is challenging. I probably wouldn’t do it again. However, I LOVE the look!!! I also love the fact that I’m using more vertical space, now. The designer measured my largest suitcase and just gave me enough  room, then included two rows of hanging space. It’s heaven!!!

You are sooooooooo Sex and the City!! My mom just re-did her walk in closet very similarly (in the shelving, etc.). She even has a hanger to plan outfits on. But the chandelier and the wallpaper is a FANTASTIC classy tough. I’m going to need you to come give me ideas for my little spaces!

Awesome! But I’m kinda sorta jealous ;)

LOVE your dressing room! It looks like you have SO much room.

I have a walk in closet as well and installed an ELFA shelving system from the Container Store that I really love but it’s very dark in there. I wish the shelving were white instead of the brown color I picked. I need a chandelier but since I have one of those annoying pull down lighting systems I’d have to rewire the whole thing so for now I have a couple of paper pom poms hanging from the ceiling.

I bet you love walking in to your closet every morning now!

  16. It is really amazing. Seeing as I’ve seen it in person….the new closet re-do makes it look 150% better, and the space, well you have so much more space now.

  17. Wow! Gorgeous! I have some serious closet envy right now!!! You may just inspire me to get crackin’ on my boring old basic closet…..thanks for sharing! Oh and I absolutely LOVE the chandelier and white frame with necklaces hanging inside.

  18. Wow, makes you want to keep it just like it is and never take anything out of it’s place. It is a beautiful space! I was wondering about stenciling on textured walls, but you are right, it would be well worth it! I love how you got your chandelier at Cutting Edge Stencils…no one caught that? Great DIY job, very impressed with your skills.
