As I’ve gotten older and wiser, I’ve also become much more organized. When I was a kid/teenager/college student/young woman, I was a slob. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before a number of times…I’m not proud of it, but rather, how far I’ve come!!!
Whenever my mother comes over to visit, she’ll make comments about how tidy my place is. It’s not always perfect, but for the most part, I don’t have things just laying about any longer.
However, I never really wanted anyone to open doors or cabinets in my house.
This weekend, I decided to cook for the first time in a while and when I went in to find a spice that I needed, I was greeted with this disaster:
The problem had become so bad that I had started to buy spices that I already had…I mean, do you know how expensive cumin is???
While at Target, I decided to buy a spice rack so that I could actually see what I had and I was shocked to learn that I had so much of the stuff…one thing is for certain now: I won’t be buying anymore cumin any time soon!
How often do you organize your cabinets and replace or throw out old spices???
PS – hope you like my links. ; )

Cumin is one of the most expensive spices!!! Drives me crazy because we use it a lot!!! We also refer to it as B.O. spice. As soon as December 3rd rolls around (client deadline) I am cleaning this entire house, including the darn spice cabinet.
I clean out my pantry twice a year and donate anything unopened to the food kitchen. If it’s old it gets tossed as well as if it’s a mystery!
There’s always a mystery in there somewhere!
I get my spices organized right from the start when I move somewhere new, then I just have to maintain them. For spices I don’t use that often, I try to get a small amount, either from World Market or Whole Foods. It’s a space saver and cost-effective. I should throw out some spices that are less than fresh but they still provide flavor so I can’t bring myself to do it quite yet. Happy cooking!
I love those cubboard organizations thingys…..I always look at them and try to decide which one would work best, cause they have so many different ones…..and then I end up walking away without any of them….sigh. I love cooking and I have lots and lots of spices, so I just need to jump in and try one. Thanks for sharing!
