Last week, I was at a conference in Napa…ya, I know you’re incredibly jealous. I flew from John Wayne to Sac, then rented a car and drove the rest of the way. I flew out of a new terminal and landed in a new terminal; quite a surprise for a gal who has made the same trip a number of times.
While I was relishing in the newness of my experience, I realized that many travel far less frequently than I do, so I thought I’d pass along some of my tips and tricks.
KNOW YOUR AIRLINE
When I’m traveling to and from Sacramento, it’s always on Southwest. I have no problem with this airline and actually like traveling with them…because I have a system in place that works every time.
EXACTLY 24 hours before my flight, either my assistant or I will check in to ensure A List status so I can have my first pick of seats. I like to sit towards the front of the aircraft, so I don’t have to wait on unsophisticated travelers. I also like to get my back in the overhead compartment.
On Southwest, I know that the overhead compartments are smaller than other airplanes…so I keep one roller bag that is a little smaller and only use on brief business trips. A friend once mocked me for having too much luggage…but I think it’s pretty smart to keep one that I know will fit on those planes and since I don’t use it for all of my travel, it has lasted longer than perhaps it should have!
EAT OR BUY A MEAL BEFORE YOUR FLIGHT
Even if your airline does serve meals, chances are you will pay an astronomical amount for a small slice of cheese approximately four almonds and a stale cracker. Most airports have fantastic food options, so go ahead and eat before that flight, or get your meal to go! Your seatmates might all be jealous, but you’ll have a full belly.
DON’T MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU
Man, I can’t tell you how much I insist upon this one. I like to read or sleep on planes and I know that it might be rude, but if you make eye contact or say hello to your seatmates, you’re opening yourself up to hearing their life story FOR THE ENTIRE FLIGHT. Avoid the crazy!
GET THE GPS IF YOUR RENTAL CAR AGENCY OFFERS IT
I typically print out maps and directions before a trip, but if I forget, I just assume I can use my iPhone. However, in CA, this is not allowed, and you also face the possibility of having no cell service. For $10 bucks, I rented a GPS who talked me to my destination and though she was loud and cranky, I must say that I really appreciated having it!

Great tips, JJ! I view flights as great uninterrupted reading time so I am a proponent of avoiding eye contact as well. The exception to the rule would be if a hot single guy sat next to me but it hasn’t happened yet.
I just heard this from my midwife…if you don’t want to get sick use saline spray in your nose before you get on tthe plane and after…also up your vitamin d…something about keeping the mucus layer in the noise moist so it can bat off bacteria…
