DEPRESSING CHRISTMAS MUSIC

Usually when I hear “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” I get a little sad. I don’t think I’m the only one who hears the haunting tune and the sweet song and feels their throat tighten up.

While it’s a lovely song, let’s face it…it’s a depressing song.

Last week, I was rockin some extra hormones and heard “Feed the World” and started blubbering. Everyone joining together to sing for world peace and to end starvation, nearly robbed me of my composure. Ya, I was a disaster for roughly four minutes. Not my finest moment.

So, as the season is upon us and I’ve been listening to Holly on Sirius XM non-stop, I thought I’d heard the most depressing of Christmas tunes…UNTIL TONIGHT.

HOLY CRAP, I JUST ABOUT LOST MY CHICKENS.

WHO WRITES STUFF LIKE THIS??? IS THEIR INTENT TO OBLITERATE LISTENERS???

Check it out at your own risk, people. I won’t be held responsible for snot bubbles.

I think the most depressing Christmas song has got to be Christmas Shoes. It was so sad they even made a freaking movie out of the song–both of which I refuse to listen to/watch because I really don’t like to be depressed. I’ll stick to the happy stuff instead :)

absolutely agree about Christmas Shoes, worst and most depressing holiday song EVER!!

  3. Whoever wrote this song obviously has some serious issues with Christmas. What the hell? I guess the intention was good but holy hell – that is sad.

But why is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Sad? Am I missing the deeper meaning in it? Or do you mean the way Judy Garland sings it is sad?

It’s just kind of haunting…and the way it’s sang just makes me think the person she doubts they’ll all be together again. Am I crazy?! : )

And yes, it’s like that song was meant to break your heart!!! Why do they play with us like that?!

I agree. Depressing. Here’s what I think: Live is hard. Bad things happen. If you have a scap of humanity in you, your heart aches on a regular basis for someone, somewhere. So, I choose to surround myself with books, movies and music that uplift. Life is short. Feel the pain, but look toward the hope. Merry Christmas from the Texas Gulf Coast, where it’s likely Christmas will be warm, and that’s just fine!

Lordy, I am so glad somebody else thinks the same. I’ve always wondered what it was about Christmas that made people want to write these story-songs about the saddest possible thing that they could possibly conjure up and then drop that bomb on the unsuspecting, once joyful but no longer, public. I dislike Christmas Shoes most of all. The absolute worst. We should be celebrating the birth of Jesus! Write something happy people!

I think “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is sad because of how the artist sings it – all slow and morose. Very depressing.

I’d never heard the Christmas Shoes song until the other night, and I had to change the station because it’s a HORRIBLE song. I had no idea it’s depressing too!

  7. lost my chickens and snot bubbles. this is why i love you. got half way through the video and had to stop. so so sad. hope you have a wonderful holiday! xoxo

This guy is an acclaimed writer, christian singer and adoption advocate. I think this song must be to bring attention to adoption. Personally, i’m not a fan but I saw him on a show once discussing the loss of his youngest adopted daughter. I think she was six or seven but it would really make you cry. I avoid christmas shoes like the plague!! One more thing, i used to love please come home for christmas bon jovi version. It was my annual christmas drinking while I put my tree up single depressed girl song. Thank God those days are long gone. I only make room for happy music now.

are you guys kidding me? there are actually kids out there who aren’t wishing for i-pod touches, x-boxes and hollister gift cards. reality sucks, but for some people, Christmas hurts. a lot. who says it all has to be ‘happy’?
