SUPERSTITIONS

I know it’s weird to be discussing this during the holiday season, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a bit lately.

Over Thanksgiving, my Swedish cousins stopped by the desert briefly on their way to the Grand Canyon. As they walked in, we all stopped and noticed that my cousin’s wife was roughly six months pregnant.

We were stunned.

We see them several times a year and are Facebook friends with them both, and found it bizarre that none of us knew. When we were clearly all shocked, they told us that in Sweden, it’s superstitious to make a big announcement about pregnancy. They also said that they don’t like baby showers.

When they left, we were all aghast at how serious they were in their belief!

This got me thinking about other superstitions that people have.

Anytime a friend drives through a yellow light, she kisses her fingers and touches the roof.

Another person I know (not Catholic) crosses herself whenever she sneezes.

My little sister used to turn all of her dolls’ heads around at night before going to sleep. TOTALLY CREEPY!

My dad uses the first putter he ever got, even though he’s upgraded his clubs several times over the years.

I know someone who almost got married on Friday, the 13th, but then changed her mind…didn’t want to risk it!

How about you? Have any superstitions? Do you know anyone who is firmly committed to one? Just curious and intrigued by the phenomenon!

The doll head thing is super creepy! I can’t think of any superstitions. Well, I do think it’s bad luck to go to your team’s game and not wear their colors or official merchandise but most true fans would probably agree with me on that one.

  2. I used to be VERY superstitious. I’m less so now. I’m not sure why it’s changed.

Sometimes superstitions just make you feel like you have control over things you have NO control over, you know? Like at least you’ve done your part!

I always tell performers to break a leg because telling them good luck is bad luck! For dancers, you are supposed to wish them luck by saying Merde.
