How Is It Already Summer?!

It's hard to believe how fast time flies. Just yesterday, I was snowboarding in the mountains and now I'm prepping for a family trip to Hawaii (shameless brag alert)! I remember the summers of my youth...the excitement, the anticipation, the long days in the sun. If I can capture just a tiny sliver of that, I'll be one happy girl!

THE THREE CURTAIN DILEMNA

In my living room, I have a rather large set of sliding doors that go outside to the deck. I love how they let in a lot of light…when I want it. Usually, not first thing in the morning when I’m walking around in my undies.

Due to the larger than standard width size, I’ve never been able to hang two curtain panels and be done with it; a third panel in the middle has always been needed. However, that pesky third panel has always been a pain in my arse.

I’ve tried pulling the middle panel to the tie back on the right, but it never really looks very nice. There’s usually a big gap or just too much fabric to look the way I want. I’ve tried tying a fabric ribbon around the middle panel, as well. While pretty, it wasn’t very functional on a daily basis.

Over the last week or so, I’ve wanted the door open to let in some cool fresh air. On a whim, I tied the panel in a knot and then untied it before bed. I did it again this weekend and realized the ease was working for me. However, I’m pretty sure I’m white trash for settling on this option (wouldn’t be the first time).

So here’s my question, what would YOU do with the pesky middle curtain panel???

Please avert your eyes to the random crap on the balcony. I’m working on a DIY project and need to take those two pieces of luggage to the garage. ; )

  1. Jennylee says:

buy an extra panel so you have 4 then you can pull two on each side back!

  2. Arianne says:

I was going to say what Jennylee said :) I’ve either made it 4 panels, or I cut the third panel in half and sewed it up (so that it didn’t have the bulk of 4 panels). I love your first world problems. ;-)

  3. Roianne says:

Ditto on the fourth panel. I had to do the same thing to one of my windows. :)

  4. Melissa says:

Yes, a forth panel would solve the problem, giving you two on each side to be closed with ease when you want them closed.

I totally would do what you’ve done. It has kind of a cabana flair. Now you just need a pool boy!

  6. Of course, there’s always the option of taking the third panel down and just leave the two side panels up. It gives the whole view a kind of Peep Show flair. The neighbors will love it.

  7. For the record, I wouldn’t have thought of the 4th panel either. I would recommend buying blinds. :)

Okay, so I have the same dilemma. I can’t put in a 4th panel because of the way the rod is screwed into the wall. So, after just drapping the curtain in the door handle – very classy, I know – I got a tie. It still sits in the middle, but looks much better.

  9. Ok, what am I not seeing? Why do you have a drape in the middle anyway? It looks like the two side panels are long enough to pull across the window without the middle panel…am I wrong? If they aren’t, you could cut the middle panel in half and sew them each half to to the two side panels. And by the way, being lazy today, and gonna leave my comments all in one. I am playing catch up, and have been having a blast reading all your stories about mini ponies, rave parties and skiing. I love how you tell a story, your so darn good at it!
